The new all-weather Baltimore Lifeboat Alan Massey arrived to brilliant sunshine on Wednesday 15 February 2012 to be greeted by a flotilla of boats ranging from ferries to sailing dinghies at the entrance to Baltimore Harbour. These included our two ferries Dún an Óir 11 and Dún Aengus, both bedecked with bunting and with full compliments of well-wishers aboard. Other boats from Cape Clear Island which took part included The Gaisceannán, skippered by Micheál Ó Ceadagáin and The Boy Jaime skippered by Duncan Harper. All seafaring members of the Cottrell family took part in the day’s events, Directors Cathal on the arriving vessel and Brendan who skippered the Dún Aengus were joined by brother Micheál, operator of Baltimore Seasafari but today on the old lifeboat, Hilda Jarret. Of course, not far from the fray on this special day Mother Mary Cottrell proudly kept a good eye on all including other members of the family from the top deck of the Dún an Óir 11. Also taking part, our crew member and skipper Niamh Ní Drisceoil, whose mother Ceceila gratefully recalled her own evacuation by Lifeboat from Cape Clear for her birth during a bad winter storm. Thank you to all others who crewed our boats on the day, Tadgh, Pádraig, and Shane Ó Drisceoil and Derry Mc Sweeney. All proceeds collected by Fay and Treasa go to the Baltimore Lifeboat Fund and thanks to Susie for the photos uploaded to our photo gallery.
