New Traditional Irish Music Course for Cape Clear Island
In 2014 Coláiste Phobal Chléire offers an exciting new week long traditional music for young musicians between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age. It is aimed at those who have already developed an interest and ability in traditional music and who would both enjoy and benefit from an intensive week of formal tuition, informal practice and group sessions. The course will focus on the student’s main instrument and will encourage all students to diversify their interests by providing workshops in traditional song and sean nós dancing, and if they wish, a second instrument of choice.
Guitar tuition will also be available which include both the use of the guitar to accompany traditional music and other styles playing. The main areas of tuition will focus on Irish traditional instruments (fiddle, traditional flute/tin whistle, accordion, guitar, mandolin etc.) as well as amhránaíocht ar an sean nós and rince ar an sean nós (traditional song and dance). Alternative evening/recreational activities will include céilís, guided walks, boat trips, swimming, kayaking and treasure hunts. Students may attend either as day student or avail of full board in accommodation similar to that of Irish College students. We welcome families who may wish to arrange their own accommodation on the Island over the week and additional sessions/tuition will be arranged for adults and other children according to demand.
It is planned to arrange a number of informal sessions for family members during the week and walks, excursions etc. will be arranged. Sunday 17 August is the annual Lá Spraoi Chléire or family Fun Day so families are guaranteed a series of fabulous fun events to suit all tastes. This is a fantastic opportunity for all the family to enjoy a week on Cape Clear Island staying in one of our holiday homes, famous yurts, hostel, guesthouses or even camping.
This new course is scheduled from 16 to 23 August and costs €450 for full board and €225 for non-residential students. Discounts of €50 are offered for second and more members of the same family on both the residential and non-residential options.
