Launch of Lusitania Display in Cape Clear Heritage Centre
Cape Clear Island will join various other venues that plan to hold commemorations on Thursday next 7th May on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania. This will take place in the Island Heritage Centre at 12 noon.
The Centre has prepared a new display on the event which includes a number of items amongst them a restored deckchair which was washed up on the Island. The display focuses on stories of local interest including the surfacing of the U boat in the days before the event to purchase fish locally, the destruction of other fishing vessels later in the war, the part played by Surgeon Long, as recounted by his great granddaughter and Island resident Fiona Mac Lachlainn and the story of the Coughlan children whose mother later married a fisherman from the Island.
All are welcome
