The inaugural screening of the short file Aonrú which took place in Club Cléire on Sunday 31 May was by any standards a resounding success. Even standing room was eventually at a premium as both locals and visitors packed in to see what was undoubtedly an extremely high quality and innovation production. Having shot 40 hours of film above and below the water, from the sky above and throughout the length and breath of the Island Director Jason Gaffney had plenty to choose from and as as he said more than once "the beauty of the Island speaks for itself". The film was meant be be about the life of Conor Ó Drisceoil the last full time fisherman on Cape Clear Island and by circumstance rather than design became a requiem rather than a celebration. More poignant and powerful for this perhaps, it presents a moment in time in the life of the Island that requires sober reflection and is tinged with an understandable sadness. It nevertheless shows the Island to be a unique and wonderful place and may well prompt prospective visitors to come. It will now do the rounds of the short film circuit starting with the Galway Film Festival and has seen enquiries come from as far away as Australia. It is hoped to undertake a second promotional film using some of the footage taken. We thank Chuck Kruger for this photo of the attendance.
