This has been a fabulous weekend on Cape Clear Island with so many joyful happenings coming one on top of the other. The whole week beforehand was our annual Swim Week where our young people endured both rain and sunshine with most achieving their personal goals. On Thursday there was a great kick off to the weekend with a teenage disco in the Club with our local DJ Aodh, where the locals were joined by a whole troop of Arkow Sea scouts, many of whom could demonstrate some very fancy moves indeed. On Friday after an unexpected fine sunny day betrayed a dire forecast local singer and musician Sarah Jane Cronin made her debut on the Island in the Club and was very well received. Saturday blossomed again with pristine weather conditions for the first ever 5k fun run which attracted a massive 90 entrants. There was a really incredible atmosphere and this was compounded many times during the event itself by the many stewards and supporters along the route who treated runners, joggers and walkers alike like celebrities. Apologies for not knowing who won what, in fact, given that fact that everyone enjoyed themselves so much it seemed as if everyone won. Afterwards there were ample refreshments for all thanks again to the wide spread support for the event amongst the Island community. This was a fabulous idea, thanks to Niamh and all who helped her and congratulations to Bere Island for coming up with the idea in the first place. More good news that day in the form a modest return of the Sailing Community to the Island for a rally and bar-b-cue following a hiatus of some years. Again it was very nice to see yachts gathering in the harbour and we hope that this is a foretaste of similar events to come. Saturday night saw another great night of music and singing in the club with many contributions from our nautical visitors and on Sunday, well, the adults just crashed and chilled out while along the beach an army of children created and even bigger dam building spectacle than usual.
