Cape Clear Islanders breathed a cautious sign of relief this morning to hear that one of our youngest residents has been successfully medically evacuate by Baltimore Lifeboat from the Island. All are praying for a full recovery. Through good fortune there was a nurse on the Island when the incident occurred but in recent weeks, as the storms have raged and the ferry has been marooned in Oldcourt, half way up the Illen to Skibbereen due to the ongoing harbour works the Island has been days at a time without nursing cover. It is at times like these when there is no other medical service at hand that the Island Community most feel in need of the public health nurse. Hopefully the HSE will reflect on the excellent standard of service delivered by our island nurses over many years, dealing with many crises head on and will take steps to ensure that a full nursing service is restored as soon as possible. Of course, all this would be of little avail without the heroic efforts of Baltimore Lifeboat which has come to our rescue time and again. See
