Its good to know that there are various forces of the State which are committed to a future for Cape Clear Island and the news that a pontoon is to be installed in the new deep water outer dock is absolutely excellent. This will, we hope open up the harbor again to visiting yachtspeople and other leisure mariners and with them bring some extra business, prosperity and color to the Island. After the substantial investment to repair our storm damaged harbour and provide tide free access for the ferry its good to go the extra small step and to provide an improved and expanded service for the broader maritime community.
While these are greatly to be welcomed the Community desperately needs year round employment/business activity and for this we need a fairly dramatic change to occur to bring this about .

“Minister Coveney is also making €2 million available for a Local Authority Harbour Programme and is assessing specifically what is required to address storm damage at Local Authority owned fishery harbours following recent flooding, and these will be announced at a later date.
“It is important that the Government works to support Local Authorities in their efforts to maintain and develop the fishery harbour network which provides much needed facilities for our rural fishing and marine focussed communities.
“This Government is committed to developing and improving the facilities at our fishery harbours in West Cork and across the country. In order to do this we must continue to grow the economy, create jobs and therefore have more money to invest in services.
“Fine Gael has a clear plan to keep the recovery going. More people in work creates the resources to cut taxes for working people and invest in better services, improving living standards for all. This will ensure more people feel the benefits of a recovering economy in their own lives” Deputy Harrington concluded.
