The Second 5K fun race on Cape Clear Island, last Saturday 16 July, Rithigí Linn proved another great success with 85 competitions turning in less than ideal misty conditions to try out the new improved course through the goat farm. Starting at the Church the cheerful throng made their way uphill towards the goat farm, downhill through the farm itself and enjoyed a more or less level run (by Cape standards) along the old Bóthar Lár and small loop before facing a punishing uphill stretch towards the Cross before descending again towards South Harbour and eventually back to North Harbour. Along the way there were volunteer stewards and at the finish another crowd to clap and cheer all those who completed the course. As last year there were some unorthodox participants, including at least one dog but the accolade must go to Derek, competing with a buggy and three young children. With the winners achieving an impressive 16 minutes there was a competitive edge to the event, with locals Conor and Aodh Ó Drisceoil performing very well. The prizewinning mugs were very well received as were the generous refreshments in Club Cléire. The author, himself won a mug for sartorial elegance, which he feels and as the photo shows, was richly deserved!.
All in all great fun was had by everyone, there was a great atmosphere, everyone helped, and we cannot wait until next year again.
