  An Important Milestone

Yesterday evening a hugely important milestone in the rich cultural life of Cape Clear Island occurred with the publication of a 350 page collection of the spoken Irish in the Island collected over a period of 50 years by the renown scholar Brendán Ó Buachalla and compiled, after his untimely death by James Mc Closkey and Cathal Goan with the generous help and support of the O'Buachalla Family. This took place in the Institute for Advanced Studies, Dublin and as the photos show was well attended. The book is of first class scholar material but given the nature and the breath of the knowledge presented will also appeal to Gaelgóirí who  have an interest in the peculiarities of the language spoken on the Island for generations. Brendán was directed towards Oileán Cléire while studying in Belfast under the renown scholar, Heinrick Wagner in the early 1960's and Islanders will be aware of his very many visits to the Island and his friendship with many of the older folk, now sadly all gone from us. For the moment the book is available from the Institute itself but we hope that arrangements can be made to have copies available on the Island. Photos show the large crowd, Aingeal Ó Buachalla signing a copy for the author and co-editors, Cathal Goan and Jim Mc Closkey.Taispeántar griangraf den slua mór, de Aingeal Ó Buachalla ag síniu cóip don údar agus de Jim McCluskey agus Cathal Goan.
